Pumping Station

Onnen, The Netherlands

Onnerpolder Pumping Station  The pumping station stands like a bastion at the transition from farmland to a new nature reserve. The form of the building is a reflection of the logistics of water management. The building stands at a self-evident point in the landscape: where the surrounding lines such as dikes and ditches intersect. These lines are continued in the building, so that an ascending route arises. This creates a landscape within a landscape, which serves as a viewing point for bird watching and nature management. The pumping station is a public place where the transformations in the farmland and the nature reserves of the Onnerpolder and Oostpolder can be followed. The design integrates all aspects of the pumping station, such as culverts, duckweed barriers, weirs and litter bins, in a single structure.
